We are living in unprecedented times and women are under more pressure than ever.

Before Covid, research showed that women took less time for themselves than men, putting themselves at risk. The global pandemic has escalated this. According to recent research, women are actually more stressed working at home than they are at work, even if they don’t have children.

When your days are spent juggling the demands of work, family, friends, home-schooling and so on, it can be easy to forget how important downtime is. Downtime and self-care are usually the first things to go when demands mount as women, more than  men, are conditioned to feel guilty for not being productive. Yet, emotional well-being is closely tied to physical well-being. If we aren’t taking time to rest, relax, re-energise and restore, we pay the price. Chronic stress increases the risk of a wide range of  psychological and physical health conditions, like anxiety, depression, heart disease, digestive disorders and sleep problems.

Moreover, when we don’t take time to nurture ourselves and our personal interests, it’s easy to lose touch with who we are in the world. We can become consumed by the constant hamster wheel of doing and try to fool ourselves into thinking that we don’t need downtime. The reality is that everyone needs downtime. Not doing so hurts your focus, creativity, effectiveness and relationships. Uber-successful women who have  sustained high levels of achievement, know that downtime and self-care are not a luxury.
